In Kentucky, cars are considered “classic” if they’re more than 25 model years old, are registered and licensed with the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, and have the proper license plates. In Kentucky, classic car insurance must include liability insurance and uninsured motorist coverage
Insuring your classic car is slightly different from insuring the car you drive to work every day. You don’t drive a classic car as often, finding replacement parts can be very difficult, and it’s probably worth more money than the average car—so you’ll need specialty

coverage.

What is classic car insurance?

Classic car insurance is tailored to provide coverage specifically for classic or antique cars. Although classic car insurance has many of the same coverages as regular car insurance, such as
liability coverage
, it does come with further limitations, such as maintenance requirements and mileage caps.

What is a classic or antique car?

Typically, a classic car is 10 to 24 years old with historic interest, such as a vintage sports car, muscle car, or hot rod.
An antique car is 25 years or older and has demonstrated historic interest. For insurance purposes, any classic car that is more than 25 years old is considered an antique.

What makes classic car insurance different?

One of the main differences is the value of the car. For a classic car, there is no predetermined “book value”, since each one is unique in its own, special way.
You’ll have to come to an agreement with your insurance provider about your own classic car’s value. This will be specified and written into your policy agreement. Your car will be covered up to that agreed-upon amount without depreciation.
There are some other factors that differentiate classic car insurance from the insurance you buy for your normal car:
  • Price: Classic car coverage is most often cheaper than a standard car insurance policy.
  • Limited use: Classic cars have a mileage cap and can only be used occasionally for events like exhibitions, shows, parades, club activities, or for the occasional pleasure drive.
  • Storage: Classic cars must be stored safely and securely, preferably in a locked garage.
  • Condition: The car must be restored, maintained, and preserved in its original condition (or be undergoing restoration).

  • Be used only for exhibitions, parades, or other special uses, and not for general transportation
  • Must be registered and licensed by
    Kentucky’s Transportation Cabinet
  • Carry two (2) special license plates, different in design and color from regular state plates, as issued by the Transportation Cabinet
  • Plate must denote Historic Motor Vehicle
  • If the car’s original Kentucky plate is 25 years or older, it can be displayed—plate and registration must remain with the vehicle at all times
  • Classic car’s registration and plate shall be valid so long as the car exists
  • If a classic car is sold in Kentucky, registration and license shall be transferred to the new owner (vehicle will not need to be re-registered)

What impacts the cost of classic car insurance in Kentucky?

For the most part, classic car insurance is usually cheaper than a standard car insurance policy. The price will vary, though, depending on what kind of coverage you need for your classic car.
Here are some other things that may impact your classic car insurance premium:
  • Model year
  • Stated or guaranteed value—more expensive cars will be pricier to insure
  • Mileage—the more you drive, the higher your premium will be
  • Customization—flatbed towing, roadside assistance, and spare parts coverage will increase your premium
  • Your driving record—many companies will only offer classic car insurance to drivers with spotless records

Benefits of classic car insurance

Regular car insurance isn’t enough to protect a classic or antique vehicle against loss or damage. If the value of your car exceeds its original selling price, it may be deemed a collectible—you may need to buy specialized classic car insurance.
Here are some of the key benefits to purchasing classic car insurance:
  • Lower rates than regular car insurance (often anywhere from 40% to 70% less)
  • Higher coverage limits (often up to $500,000)
  • Negotiable deductibles and annual mileage caps
  • Guaranteed or agreed value coverage
  • Many optional add-ons, such as towing with flatbed trucks and coverage for memorabilia, spare parts, etc.
  • Discounts for additional security features, such as GPS tracking, VIN etching, and alarms
  • Claims handling from fellow car enthusiasts
  • Potential discounts on collector car club memberships
