Motorcycle helmet laws in Arizona require all motorcycle operators and passengers under the age of 18 to wear a helmet. They must also wear protective glasses, goggles, or a face shield if the motorcycle they are driving does not have a windshield. Failure to do so may result in a fine of $25 to $75.
Arizona is one of the many states to pass a motorcycle helmet law in an attempt to save lives. In 2019, motorcycles were involved in
14% of all traffic fatalities
. By making the law applicable to young drivers, Arizona’s motorcycle helmet law helps protect the most vulnerable motorcyclists on the road.
But this doesn’t mean that motorcyclists over 18 should ride without a helmet. To help break down the details of helmet laws—and reasons to wear helmets while on the road—

Do you have to wear a motorcycle helmet in Arizona?

If you’re under 18 in Arizona and are operating or riding on a motorcycle, all-terrain vehicle, or motor-driven cycle, you must wear a helmet. Drivers and passengers under 18 are also required by
ARS § 28-964
to wear some form of eye protection—glasses, goggles, or a visor—if the motorcycle doesn’t have a windshield.

Exceptions to Arizona’s motorcycle helmet law

Motorcyclists over 18 are not legally obligated to wear a helmet in Arizona.
Arizona’s helmet laws also do not apply to the following vehicles:
  • Electrically-powered three-wheel vehicles
  • Three-wheeled vehicles with an enclosed cab
  • Mopeds with a maximum speed of 25 mph

Penalties for breaking Arizona’s motorcycle helmet law

If you’re under 18 and are caught riding a motorcycle without a helmet, you can be fined $25 to $75 for a first offense. The fine may increase for subsequent offenses.

Why it’s important to wear a motorcycle helmet

Even if you’re over 18, wearing a helmet and other protective gear when you’re on the road is a good idea—a helmet can literally save your life.
Motorcyclists who don’t wear a helmet are 41% more likely to suffer a fatal head injury in an accident. Wearing a helmet is the easiest way to protect yourself against serious neck and head injuries.
Hundreds of preventable injuries resulting from motorcycle accidents occur every year in Arizona. Even though the state law only requires riders under 18 to wear a helmet, protecting yourself by riding with protective gear is an excellent choice.
