Have you been to the Porsche Experience Center (PEC) in Carson, California? If you haven't, now might be a great time for a visit. The amazing experiences you'll have at this center of all things Porsche
are seriously as legit as the Jerry insurance app
! Even if you have been there before, it's worth another trip to this iconic car brand’s lair just to experience their latest event—the premiere of Porsche's new sci-fi virtual reality video game.
Experiencing the Cosmic Chase VR game
Cosmic Chase is a first-person shooter game played while wearing a VR headset strapped to your head. Oh, and it's played from the backseat of a Cayenne S SUV while navigating the PEC handling course. Fortunately, you won't have to drive while you're shooting. A PEC Drive Coach handles the driving for you so you can concentrate on your aim.
You'll need great aim as you hunt down alien Cymex spaceships across the galaxy from the seat of your own spaceship. At least, it will feel like you're in a spaceship due to the real-time coordination between the vehicle's acceleration, steering, and braking and the game's software. This seamless integration explains the lack of motion sickness—it's no worse than on the average amusement park ride.
Your virtual spaceship will perfectly match the car's motion, banking in the same direction as it zooms past asteroids and pursues the alien ships through the expansive battlefield in space. The more enemy ships you destroy, the higher you'll rank. Players' rankings are displayed on the game's leaderboard inside the PEC.
What does Porsche have to do with imaginary aliens?
MotorTrend
was one of the first to sample the Center's new Cosmic Chase virtual reality video game and they described it as "...quick and easy fun." The MotorTrend test players expected the game to be nothing more than a "rolling barf bag", and were pleasantly surprised when it wasn't. In fact, they think it shows the potential for advanced and safe in the not-so-distant future. For right now, Porsche is using the game as a draw to entice young adults and families into visiting the Los Angeles Experience Center. While there, the company probably hopes these future car buyers will become enamored with the Porsche brand. If the strategy works, the company may introduce the game at other PECs worldwide.
