What do we know about the Porsche 718 EV?
Many details of the Porsche 718 EV's design and power are currently lacking, as we are still a few years away from its launch. It is slated for a 2025 launch, and it will be the third Porsche EV to hit the market. The aforementioned electric Taycan was Porsche's first venture into EVs, and next year, they will release the electric Macan.
This is a promising sign of the potential of the Porsche 718 EV. To truly see what an electric Porsche could do, though, we can look at a concept car they recently showed off, the Mission R.
Porsche is showing off their electric potential with the Mission R
The Porsche Mission R is a concept car shown off in September of last year. It is designed essentially as a race car with the track in mind, and as a result, it may be different than consumer cars like the Porsche 718 EV. Despite this, it still highlights the capabilities that Porsche electric vehicles could have.
In terms of specs, the Mission R is powered by two electric motors, making it an all-wheel-drive EV. Its motors produce 680 horsepower, and in just 2.5 seconds, it can get from 0 to 62 miles per hour. The Mission R can then reach a top speed of 186 mph.
EVs with this sort of power would be expected to be heavy, but the Mission R is surprisingly light. It weighed in at 3,306 pounds, only slightly heavier than comparable gas-powered Porsches. It is unknown if the Porsche 718 EV will be similarly lightweight.
Porsche has big plans for EVs in the near future
Porsche's roadmap of releasing the Macan next year and the 718 EV a few years later highlights the ultimate goal of the manufacturer. They are hoping to progressively shift almost entirely to electric. By 2030, Porsche's goal is for 80 percent of sales to be EVs.
