Why is gas so expensive in Michigan?

I’m going to visit family in Michigan in a few weeks and have been looking at gas prices since I’m driving. Why are they so expensive?

The highest recorded price in Michigan was $5.223 for unleaded and $5.960 for diesel in June 2022. Today—thankfully—the average gas price in Michigan has gone down to $3.827 for regular unleaded and $4.288 per gallon for diesel.
