As of June 2022, the gas tax in
Ohio
hit a high of $0.385 per gallon. Not only is that a 10.5-cent increase from 2019, but it’s also one of the highest recorded rates in the state.
Between rising gas prices from the pandemic and war in Ukraine to deteriorating road conditions, Ohio residents have experienced a lot of turbulence in gas prices over the last few years—and a lot of hurt from most people's wallets. But the increasing gas taxes have made filling up your tank in Ohio more expensive than ever. Although Ohio gas prices may not be as high as in some other states, drivers are still feeling the heat—and the pricey gas tax isn’t taking a backseat anytime soon.

How much is the Ohio gas tax?

The 2022-2023 gas tax in Ohio is $0.385 per gallon. Compared to 2019, that’s a 10.5-cent increase since the previous rate of $0.28 per gallon set in 2005.
Despite rising gas taxes and pump prices amidst the pandemic and war in Ukraine, GOP lawmakers have been determined to renovate Ohio’s roadways with a tax hike. With a 2019 deal cementing an increase of 10.5 cents per gallon at the pump under their belt, Ohioans have been feeling the weight of the spiking gas tax rates for years.
If you’re a driver without a hybrid in Ohio, you may want to rethink your next car purchase.

Is gas tax relief on the way in Ohio?

Despite President Biden’s push for a “gas tax holiday” to repeal the federal gas tax for three months and eliminate their state gas taxes at the pump for the same period, Ohio drivers didn’t see any relief. Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine wasn’t interested in taking on Biden’s plan.
That’s because dropping the state gas tax would impede the state’s transportation and construction projects. The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) estimated the financial impact of the action would be $587 million—that’s $355 million directly to the state and $232 million to local communities.

How high are gas prices in Ohio?

According to AAA, the average fuel price per gallon in Ohio is $3.679 as of September 2022.
At first glance, the gas price in Ohio may seem high, but it’s slightly below the national average of $3.765—setting Ohio in the mid-range mark for gas prices. That said, not all drivers pay the same across the state—the state has a spectrum of gas prices ranging from $3.503 to $3.815.
If you’re looking for cheap gas, head to Meigs or Gallia in the south of Ohio, where gas prices are less than $3.541 per gallon. If you make your way up north, you’ll be looking at prices north of $3.70 per gallon. Compare that to last year's $3.001 per gallon average, and it’s quite the price hike.
But it’s not just gas prices drivers have to worry about—you’re also liable for other car-related expenses like maintenance and insurance. Even so, Ohio car insurance costs will not likely put a dent in your wallet. The average premium in Ohio will run you around $1,023, almost 40% below the national average. While you may not be saving on fuel costs, there may be other areas where you can find savings.
Here’s how average gas prices in some of Ohio’s biggest cities compare based on September 2022 data from AAA:
  • Columbus: $3.684 per gallon (vs. $3.017 in September 2021)
  • Cleveland: $3.697 per gallon (vs. $3.018 in September 2021)
