Why do I need car insurance to get a driver's license in NC?
I just moved to North Carolina and I’m having major licensing issues. I don't plan to get a car, but the NC DMV won’t let me switch my license without insurance. Why is that?

because purchasing a policy that meets or exceeds that state-minimum requirements demonstrates that you can take financial responsibility for other people’s property damage and medical bills if you cause a car accident. North Carolina’s car insurance laws
require all drivers in the state to carry at least the following:- Bodily injury liability coverage: $30,000 per person, $60,000 per accident
- Property damage liability coverage: $25,000 per accident
- Uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage: $30,000 per person and $60,000 per accident in uninsured motorist bodily injury liability, and $25,000 per accident in uninsured motorist property damage liability.
While insurance is required to
get your NC license
, you don't have to purchase a standard policy. Here are two alternatives:- Get a fleet-restricted driver's license: A fleet restriction allows you to drive rental vehicles, but you'll have to purchaserental car insurance.
- Purchase a non-owners insurance policy: Anon owner car insurancepolicy provides state-minimum coverage that follows you no matter what you drive, so you can borrow or rent a vehicle and know you're covered.
