Why are my windshield wipers so loud?
Last night, I was driving home from work in the rain, and by the time I hit the highway, my windshield wipers were squeaking so loudly it drove me crazy! Why are my windshield wipers so noisy?

From your description of the problem, it sounds as if your windshield may be dirty. As you drive, your windshield picks up dirt from the road, which can result in friction. And this friction can create loud noises. Take some time to clean off your windshield—and wipe off your wipers as well—before you hit the road again. See if this makes a difference.
If this doesn’t correct the problem, here are some other possible causes:
- How hard is it raining when your wipers squeak? Interestingly, if it’s raining only lightly, there may not be enough liquid on the glass to lubricate the wipers, which will cause friction and noise. The next time it rains either moderately or heavily, see if your wipers make the same noise.
- Are your wiper blades hard or brittle? If so, it’s time you replaced them.
