I want to make sure I'm changing my engine oil often enough and not letting my oil get too dirty. What qualifies as a high soot content in engine oil?

Over 2% soot qualifies as high soot content in engine oil. The hope is to have less than 1% of soot in engine oil.
Too much soot and contaminants in engine oil can cause clogs, damage the engine, or increase oil consumption. Staying on top of your regularly scheduled oil changes is a great way to combat this issue.
For cars that use conventional oil, you should get an oil change every 3,000 to 5,000 miles. Every 7,5000 miles is passable for vehicles that take synthetic oil.
If you think your oil is too dirty, then it’s probably time for an oil change, regardless of how long it’s been since you last had one.
