What is the point of an international driving permit?

I’m booking a two-month trip to Europe and planning to rent a car, but I’ve been reading a lot about having to get an international driving permit. Why do I need an international license if I have a valid U.S. driver’s license?

Although a U.S. driver’s license means you’re legal to drive in the States, many other countries require an international driving permit (IDP). So, the point of an international driving permit is to have proof of driving privileges while traveling abroad. It can also act as a valid form of identification in over 150 countries.
Your U.S. driver’s license may suffice if you’re only going to be in another country for a week or two. But if you’re planning to stay longer, it’s a good idea to get an IDP.
Here are a few more reasons why you should consider getting an international driving permit before you drive internationally:
  • Simplifies communication with local law enforcement
  • Reduces the risk of being fined
  • Is required by most car rental agencies
