We just moved to Montana a month ago and my 13-year-old son is claiming that he can get his learner’s permit at 14. That seems really young to me. Is he right?
is 14-and-a-half years old if the teen is enrolled in a state-approved traffic education program. Teen drivers that do not enroll in one of the approved driver’s education courses will need to wait until they are 15.
Once you decide it’s time for your son to get a learner’s permit, you’ll need to accompany him to your local DMV office, and turn over the required documents. Your son will have to pass a vision test and a written exam that will test his knowledge of:
Montana traffic laws
Road signs
Road safety
He can prepare by studying the Montana Driving Manual or taking an online practice test. With a Montana learner’s permit, your son will be allowed to drive while accompanied by a licensed parent or guardian.
Once he’s completed 50 hours of supervised driving and 10 hours of nighttime driving he can apply for a restricted license if he has no traffic citations. He’ll need to pass a road test first. The restricted license will allow your son to drive alone except between the hours of 11pm and 5am and will automatically become a full driver’s license when he turns 18.
