2015 Honda Civic 1.8 engine oil capacity

Before changing your Honda Civic 1.8’s oil, you’ll need to answer one big question—exactly how much oil does your car need?
The 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine that powers your 2015 Civic has an oil capacity of 3.9 quarts, which is about 3.7 liters. Don’t confuse your engine’s oil capacity with your engine’s displacement, which is 1.8 liters. Here’s the difference:
  • Oil capacity refers to the amount of oil required for each oil change
  • Displacement is the volume your engine’s cylinders take up

What kind of oil does a 2015 Honda Civic 1.8 need?

In addition to knowing how much oil your car needs, you’ll need to know what type of oil it needs. Make sure you only use synthetic 0W-20 motor oil.
The numbers in the oil grade refer to viscosity or how thick the oil is. The “W” stands for winter, so the number right before the “W” tells us the oil’s viscosity (in this case, 0) at 0°F. The number after the dash (in this case, 20) refers to the oil’s viscosity in the heat, at 212°F.
It’s important to stick to your manufacturer's recommendations, as 0W-20 motor oil will perform best in all weather conditions, with a low viscosity that causes less wear and tear on your engine.
It’s also essential that you buy synthetic oil, as synthetic oil is healthier for your vehicle’s engine. It protects the engine due to lower levels of friction. Additives help clean the engine of deposits. And, fewer impurities mean it burns cleaner, thickens far more slowly, and has fewer deposits to start.
Honda specifically recommends Genuine Honda SAE 0W-20 Motor Oil. Feel free to use the brand of your choice, as long as it's a premium, synthetic, 0W-20 oil. Note that if you do opt for conventional oil or a synthetic blend, you’ll have to change your oil more often.

How often to change the oil on a 2015 Honda Civic 1.8

Once you know exactly how much oil you need, and the specific type, the only thing left to do is to
change your oil
Honda recommends that you change your Civic 1.8’s oil every 3,000 to 5,000 miles. How often this occurs will depend on how much you drive—so it’s important to keep a clear record of when you changed your oil last, and when your car is due for its next oil change.
Keep in mind that experts say that synthetic oil can last 7,500 to 10,00 miles—so you may be able to extend the life of each oil change if you’re investing in the proper supplies. You should always check your oil level regularly (we suggest once a month) and keep an eye out for the following signs that your oil needs to be changed:
  • Unfamiliar or
    loud noises
    coming from the engine
  • New smells, especially anything that smells like oil, smoke, or burning
  • Changes in your vehicle’s performance

How to change your oil and oil filter

To change your oil at home, you’ll need the following materials:
  • Socket wrench
  • Drain pan
  • Filter wrench
  • Replacement filter
  • 4 quarts of synthetic 0W-20 oil
Once you’ve collected your materials, begin by running your engine for a while so that it reaches normal operating temperature. In temperate weather, this should take about five minutes—but if it’s the dead of winter, you may need to let your car run longer.
Next, turn your car off, open the hood, and get to work:
  • Remove the oil fill cap
  • Get underneath the engine and remove the oil drain bolt and washer, draining the old oil into the drain pan
  • Remove the old oil filter and continue to let the oil drain
  • Install the new filter
  • Replace the oil drain bolt using a new washer and tighten it to 29 lb-ft
  • Refill the engine with your new oil and replace the fill cap
Once you’re done, use your dipstick to ensure that you’ve added enough oil to the engine. Then, run the vehicle for a few minutes and watch for any leaks. If you’ve correctly completed the job, your dashboard’s
oil pressure light
should turn off.
Don’t forget to be responsible when cleaning up. Never dump the dirty oil out on the ground or put it in your garbage bin. Instead, place it in a sealed container and bring it to a local recycling center.
After changing your oil, it’s a good idea to turn on your car and let your engine run for about 30 seconds before you check the oil level. This will give you a more accurate measurement, and you’ll be able to top it off if necessary.
