What engine is in a Mini Cooper?

How powerful are the engines in a Mini Cooper? Would I be able to tow a small pop-up camper behind my Mini, or would the engine be too weak to handle that?

A standard
Mini Cooper
will be equipped with a turbocharged 134 horsepower 1.5-liter three-cylinder engine. This gives Mini Coopers a towing capacity of about 2,000 pounds.
Unfortunately, it’s unlikely that you’ll be able to tow a camper with your Mini Cooper if you have the standard engine. Most pop-up campers require cars with a towing capacity of at least 3,000 pounds. However, some trim options have a higher towing capacity than others.
If you want to tow your camper, you’ll need to check two things:
  • The towing capacity of your specific Mini Cooper model, and
  • The towing weight of your camper
Provided that the camper is less than your towing capacity, you should be able to use your Mini Cooper without issue. Otherwise, it might be better to
rent a car
instead.
