Is there enough lithium in the world for electric cars?

I’ve been wanting to make the switch to an electric car, but I don’t want to invest in one if we don’t actually have the raw materials to make it a real possibility for everyone. Is there actually enough lithium in the world for electric cars?

While many automakers who make
electric cars
are experiencing supply chain delays and shortages of raw materials such as lithium, a shortage of lithium itself is not actually the issue.
The earth is actually abundant in lithium, and while the world’s lithium reserves technically are sufficient, the mining process of lithium is complicated, and not all reserves can be brought into production at once.
Another issue is that not all lithium can be used in electric cars. Some of it is needed to make other rechargeable devices like smartphones and laptops.
Some possible solutions to address this problem include:
  • Investing into building out greener lithium refinement plants
  • Enforcing more ethical mining standards
  • Investing in more EV infrastructure overall
