Where is the 1995 Jeep Cherokee’s OBD port location?

My sister and I just inherited an old Jeep, and we’re going to do some work on it ourselves. It's in rough (but functioning) shape, so I want to look into some trouble codes. Where is the OBD port located on a 1995 Jeep Cherokee?

What a cool inheritance! The OBD port on a 1995 Jeep Cherokee is usually located under the hood toward the right, just behind the overflow coolant reservoir. It’s black with clear plastic covering its terminals and typically on a harness with the powertrain control module (PCM).
Since this is an older model, you’ll most likely need to use OBD-I codes as opposed to OBD-II codes—which is standard for most models built in America after 1996. While you’ll likely need to consult with a trouble code guide or online sources to decipher your reading, here are a few common OBD-I codes for a 1995 Jeep:
  • 12: battery has been disconnected at least once during the last 50 start-ups
  • 17: engine coolant is colder than it should be while operating
  • 27: there’s an issue with one of the injector control circuit output drivers (it’s not responding)
  • 43: a cylinder is misfiring
  • 55: there’s an issue with the camshaft sensor or distributor timing
Of course, you can always talk to a technician or mechanic if your old Jeep ends up being a real head-scratcher. Since you may not be taking your work-in-progress on the road right away, remember to purchase
car insurance
before you start operating it, too.
You wouldn’t want a ticket to increase your
Jeep Cherokee insurance costs
—especially when you’ve spent so much money and labor getting it up and running!
