Is a Turkish driving license valid in the USA?
I’m a Turkish citizen headed to the US to check out a college I may be attending in the Fall. Will my Turkish driver’s license work for me to rent a car and drive while I’m there?

Congratulations on starting college, and hopefully on becoming an international student! Generally speaking, your Turkish driving license is valid when visiting the USA. However, you may also need to apply for an International Driving Permit (IDP).
Whether you will need an IDP will depend on:
- What states you will be driving through
- Your rental car agency’s regulations
You will need to contact the Motor Vehicle Department in Turkey prior to your visit to find out if you’ll need an IDP, as the US does not issue them to foreign visitors.
If you decide to go to school in the states, you will need to upgrade your Turkish license to a state-issued license. Regulations for this vary depending on your state, so check with your state’s department of motor vehicles (DMV) and your Designated School Office to determine your eligibility status.
