If you use a personal car to drive to different job sites, is it considered a work vehicle?

I work as a retail merchandiser. I have to use my car to drive from store to store. Is my vehicle considered a work vehicle in regard to insurance?

Answer
No, even if you use your personal car to drive between workplaces, it’s not considered a commercial vehicle, therefore, you will not need to apply for a commercial car insurance policy. However, it might be a good idea to get your car rated for business use.
You might need a commercial car insurance policy if…
  • You are transporting toxic or hazardous materials for your job
  • If your car’s registration is under a business name
  • If you drive co-workers or employees around regularly
However, you will want to speak with your insurance agent about how you are driving your vehicle. Your car may need to be rated for business use.
Business use is for drivers who use their personal vehicle during their jobs but don’t necessarily have the same high-risk factors as commercial drivers. For example, if you drive to more than one store location per day and/or deliver merchandise between the stores, business use is right for you.
If you only drive your car to a different store every day, but it is only one location per day, then ordinary commuting would be the correct rating for your vehicle.
Rating your car for business use could increase your insurance premium. Instead of getting stuck with a rate you can’t (or don’t want to) afford, download the car insurance comparison and shopping app Jerry.
The Jerry app collects quotes from up to 50 top insurance companies, like Nationwide, Allstate, Safeco, Progressive, and Travelers, in seconds! They even help cancel your old policy once you’ve made your pick.
