How do you turn off the brake lights in a Honda Civic?

My brake lights won’t turn off, and I’m not sure why. I think it might be because this little piece that looks like a crayon tip fell off my brake pedal. Is there anything I can do to turn off the brake lights in my Honda Civic?

Sometimes small parts can make a big difference to our cars. That little piece you found is called a brake pedal switch bumper, and it stops your brake light circuit from connecting until you press down on the
brake pedal
. Without it, your brake lights will always stay on.
Luckily, you can follow these steps to turn off the brake lights on your Honda Civic:
  • Start by going to your local auto shop and purchasing a new piece. It should cost less than $5.
  • Now, park your car in a safe place and turn on the engine—but make sure you keep the handbrake on.
  • Press the brake pedal down with one hand.
  • Use your other hand to feel around for a small hole in the back of your brake pedal.
  • Place your new brake pedal switch bumper into the hole.
  • Push the brake pedal switch bumper firmly into place until it feels secure.
  • Once it’s where it should be, let go of the brake and let the bumper do its job!
  • Your brake lights should now turn off.
Hopefully, those steps helped you find and fix your brake light problem! But if you’re still having trouble with your brake lights, bring your car to a mechanic for a professional diagnosis.
