I saw an accident the other day because a driver did something wrong after a tire blew out, but I can’t put my finger on what caused the problem. What should you avoid doing if your tire blows out?

I’m glad to hear that you stayed safe during the other driver’s accident. When a tire blows while driving, you want to avoid both turning the steering wheel and slamming on the brakes.
Either of these actions can cause you to lose control of your vehicle. Here’s what you can expect and what you should do instead in the event of a tire blowout:
- You’ll hear a boom from the tire and feel your vehicle jerk to one side
- Steer straight and avoid sharply turning the wheel and overcorrecting
- Apply a little more pressure to your gas pedal to help keep your forward momentum
- Turn on your hazard lights
- Let the car slow itself, only using the brake pedal once your speed has dropped below 30 mph, then veer slightly off the road
