How do I check if my car has insurance?

I took a sabbatical and have been overseas for about a year. How do I check that my car is still insured so I can drive it again?

Answer
Welcome home! The first thing you should do is try and find your policy number. Once you have this number, you can try:
  • checking online with your provider’s website
  • using your provider’s mobile app
  • calling your provider’s 24/7 hotline
  • calling your local DMV
  • calling your secretary of state office’s insurance department
If your policy has lapsed or ended while you were gone, it might be a good time to find something new. The easiest way to get insurance for the car is Jerry. Jerry collects all of your information from your existing insurer, so you’re never responsible for filling out long forms.
