How to Stop an Engine Oil Leak?

I’ve been noticing oil spots on the driveway where I park my car. Does this mean I have an engine oil leak, and if so, how can I stop the leak?

Oil spots on the driveway are a tell-tale sign that your engine oil is leaking. Luckily, there are remedies you can do at home to prevent more oil from leaking.
Depending on your comfort level with cars, you have two options to stop an engine oil leak:
  • Add an additive to your engine oil
  • Correct the problem with tools
If you’re looking for an easy, straightforward fix, you can use a stop leak additive or high mileage oil blend to help seal the leak. While this method is as simple as purchasing the additive and pouring it in, it may take a while (a hundred miles or two) before the leak stops entirely.
Alternatively, you can try to tighten the bolts around your oil pan by hand to correct the leak. Usually, loose bolts on your oil pan or valve covers are the culprit of engine oil leaks. To tighten them back up, you’ll need a torque wrench, some hand tools, and a car jack. Consult your car’s owner’s manual for details on how to go about tightening the bolts on your oil pan.
