How much does it cost to replace a car engine?
I just got an awful diagnosis at the mechanic’s. Apparently my engine needs to be replaced. They quoted me $4,000! Is that normal? How much does it cost to replace a car engine?

We’re so sorry to hear about your car. The cost to replace a car engine is between $3,000 and $5,000 for most cars.
It sounds like the quote you were given was right on the money, unfortunately. Very complex engines can cost up to $6,000 to replace. However, most four-cylinder vehicles need about $4,000 to complete an engine replacement. You can shop around, but you probably won’t find another shop willing to do this job for less than $3,000.
You have several options if that feels like too much money to spend.
If you are driving an older vehicle and $4,000 is close to the resale value of the entire vehicle, consider that you may be better off selling it as a junker. You can get cash for your old car and then buy another used car. It’s not a perfect situation but it might be the best solution if budget is a concern.
If you’re committed to getting the engine replacement, check to see if your insurance policy covers this type of scenario. It’s rare but some policies will cover
engine fires
and other related incidents. If your vehicle is very new, it may still be covered by warranty
