How long does a claim affect your home insurance for?

I recently purchased a new home and need an updated home insurance policy. My updated policy is a lot more expensive than my prior policy. I had to submit three claims over the past six years due to wind and fire damage. How long should I expect the claims to affect my home insurance for?

When you change your address or any policy information, insurance companies rerate your policy, which is likely why you saw a rate increase.
If you’ve filed claims in the past, you can expect them to affect your
home insurance
rate for five to seven years. While your claim history has a significant impact on your home insurance rate, insurers also look at:
  • Location
  • Replacement cost
  • Credit history
  • Marital status
  • Age of the house
  • Deductible
Since you filed claims in the past six years, you can expect to see your rate decrease in the next year or two, as long as you don’t file any additional claims.
That said, it’s still possible to find a lower rate for your home insurance right now. Since every company rates policies differently, you could potentially find a lower rate than what you’re paying, even with claims.
