How does the Root app track your driving?

I’ve just signed up for Root insurance in hopes of decreasing my monthly payments. How does the app track your driving habits to determine your premium?

The Root app is a smartphone-based technology that measures users’ driving behaviors to determine who is a safe driver and offer them more affordable car insurance rates. Root uses a telematics tracking system that collects information about your car and how you’re performing on the road.
More specifically, once you download the Root app, it collects data from instruments that already exist in your phone. That includes:
  • The global positioning system (GPS)
  • Accelerometer
  • Gyroscope
  • Magnetometer
When measuring safe driving behavior, the Root app looks at:
  • When you’re on the road
  • How you brake
  • Focused driving
  • Turn speeds
Simply put, Root only uses your actual driving behavior to determine your insurance premiums. The safer you drive, the more money you can save.
