What does SS mean on a car?

I’ve seen several Chevrolet cars that sport an SS badge. They always look a bit more sporty, but I’m not sure why. What exactly does SS mean on these cars?

Several cars over the past few decades have had the SS brand, including the
Camaro

The first Super Sport, or SS, trim was available on the 1961
Chevy Impala
