How does defensive driving work?

I was pulled over for going 15 mph over the speed limit on the interstate. As a silver lining, the officer was nice, and he told me that I could take defensive driving to lower the number of points on my license. I’ve never taken the class before. How do defensive driving courses work?

Speeding tickets
can cause a significant increase in the points on your license—and in the cost of your car insurance. But defensive driving is a get-out-of-jail-free card.
Here’s how defensive driving works:
  • You may have to contact your DMV or ask the traffic court if you’re eligible for defensive driving.
  • If you are, taking a class can either lower your points or dismiss a ticket altogether.
  • Most courses cost only $20 to $100 and take approximately four to eight hours to complete.
  • You can usually take these classes online.
  • Upon completion, you’ll get a certificate and reap the benefits of your hard work, which may include cheaper car insurance rates!
In addition to your potential defensive driving discount, did you know that shopping around with the
