How do you use the key on a BMW electric car?
I am so obsessed with my new BMW! I know there’s a digital key I can use, but I’m not the most tech-savvy gal. How do you use the key on a BMW electric car?

Congrats on your new purchase! The BMW Digital key is quite a treat for BMW owners.
The BMW car key app pairs with your iPhone to lock, unlock and start your engine without using an actual key. The app can be securely stored in your My BMW app, ConnectedDrive app, or Wallet app. You can even share your access with five other people.
Here’s what we know about using the key for BMW electric cars:
- Hold the top of your phone less than two inches away from the door handle to unlock it. On your display, a checkmark will appear, and the word “Done.” Only the driver’s side will be unlocked.
- Express Mode allows drivers to open the door or even start the car without having to unlock their phone beforehand.
- To start the engine, place your phone down on the charging tray and push the start/stop button.
- If you share access to your vehicle with your teen, you can **set **limitations to make sure that Intelligent Safety and Dynamic Stability Control are active. In some models, stereo volume can be restricted as well.
- Fortunately, the digital key doesn’t need a network connection, so you’ll still be able to use it in a subterranean parking garage.
- Phone battery out of power? The key can also be** used** for up to five hours after your phone is switched into power-saving mode.
