How do you get your name off of a car loan?

Is there a way to remove my name from the car loan that I have with my boyfriend? He is moving across the country and I am staying behind for a year to finish school. He wants to take over the joint loan and bring the car with him.

That’s a big change! If you need to remove your name, your boyfriend will need to refinance the loan himself and sign the new agreement. Here’s how:
  • First, shop around before settling on a loan. Look at the interest rate, repayment terms, fees, and any other elements of the loan contract that are important to you for each lender that you consider.
  • Once you’ve chosen a lender, it’s time to apply for the new loan. Your boyfriend should apply as the only borrower since you’re removing your name.
  • Gather the documents you need. This will include a copy of your boyfriend’s driver’s license, your vehicle registration,
    proof of insurance
, and proof of income. The new lender might ask for more specific documents as well.
  • If the application is accepted, your boyfriend will sign the contract as the sole borrower. The lender will pay off your old loan for you. At that point, you’ll no longer be on the loan contract!
