How do you calculate the top speed of an electric car?

I heard that electric cars have a significantly lower top speed than a regular gas car. I want to buy an electric car, but not if it’s slow, since I like to go fast. How do you calculate the top speed of an electric car?

Great question! Most electric cars will have their top speed included in their specs, and depending on the model you’re interested in, it can be massively different. However, the average maximum speed for an electric car is anywhere from 140MPH to 160 MPH.
This is in line with gas cars, which max out in the same general range (unless you’re driving a
McLaren
, in which case you should wait for their electric car to come out).
Most electric cars will include their top speed in their specifications, like battery range. When looking at electric cars to buy, look for mention of maximum speed, and it should be readily available.
If you’ve already bought your
electric vehicle
and you’re trying to figure out the speed now, your owner’s manual should have plenty of information on that.
If you’re mechanically inclined and have access to the information you need, it’s relatively straightforward to find an electric vehicle road speed calculator online.
You’ll need to know the motor speed, final reduction drive (gear) ratio, and road wheel diameter, and the calculator should work it out for you.
Whether your car runs on gasoline or electric power you always need insurance.
