How do I transfer my car from one state to another?
How am I supposed to transfer my car from one state to another? I'm getting ready to move to Maine, and the whole transfer process seems really complicated.

Moving states can be a fun and exciting experience, but it’s also a logistical nightmare! That’s why most states will give you some time to get settled before you need to register your car. In Maine, you’ll have 30 days from the date of your move to transfer your car. So whenever you’re ready to get started, follow these steps:
- First, you’ll need to update your location on your insurance policy. To register your car, you’ll need to provide proof of insurance, and your insurance won’t be valid if it’s registered to the wrong address! Some companies may let you keep the same policy, but you might need to buy new coverage when you move.
- Once you haveproof of insurance, you’ll need to register your car at your local BMV. Along with your proof of insurance, you’ll need to bring your car’s title and out-of-state registration card.
- After that, you should be done transferring your car! But you’ll also need to apply for a new license. Luckily, the process is easy! Just provide the BMV with ID proof that you are a Maine resident and a U.S. citizen or lawful resident and they’ll get your license transferred.
