When I drive, I sometimes drift into the next lane. I worry that this is a dangerous habit. How do I stay in my lane when I'm driving?

It’s a scary moment when you catch yourself drifting into the next lane—especially if it’s an oncoming lane. Many people struggle with this problem, and it’s a
driving safety issue
. Good on you for wanting to fix it.
Staying centered in your lane is mainly a matter of focus. Consider the following tips for staying in your lane while driving:
  • Keep your eyes on the road ahead. Shift your focus to things far ahead of you. If your focus is too close, you may risk drifting.
  • Minimize distractions. Avoid fiddling with the radio or letting your eyes wander—and definitely don’t pick up that phone.
  • Keep your hands relaxed. You don’t need an iron grip on the steering wheel. Relax your hands, and remember you can always adjust your grip as needed.
  • Mind the lane lines. Checking your side mirrors to see where the lines are can help you determine whether you’re centered in your lane.
  • Don’t follow the car ahead. If you focus too much on the vehicle in front of you, this can lead you astray.
  • Check your tires. Drifting lanes isn’t always a result of driver error. If your tires are unequally inflated or out of alignment, your car may pull to one side.
Make sure to avoid swerving as well. Some drivers—especially newer drivers—might swerve to avoid hitting potholes or items in the road. Swerving may be a reflex, but it can also be dangerous.
Stay on high alert while driving so you can avoid situations that might cause you to swerve. If you keep your focus far ahead of you, you’ll (almost) always know what’s coming.
Driving is tricky, so you want to make sure you’re covered in case anything goes wrong.
