What is the driving age in Canada?

Our family is moving to Canada next year, and we have two kids who are aged 12 and 14. My son heard that in Canada you can drive when you’re 14, and I didn’t believe him! How old do you actually have to be to drive in Canada?

So you’re really doing it, you’re making that legendary move from the U.S. of A to the Great White North, and your kids are telling you all sorts of rumors. The driving age in Canada differs from province to province, just like it does from state to state in America. In most provinces, you need to be 16 to get your learner’s permit, but there are some exceptions to this rule:
  • In Alberta, you only need to be 14 to get your learner’s permit, but you’ll still need to wait until you’re 16 until you can apply for a restricted driver’s license.
  • In both Manitoba and Quebec, learners can get a jump start on their driving and get a learner’s permit at 15 if they’re enrolled in driving school.
The standard age for obtaining a full license in Canada also varies from province to province, with some opting for 18 and others 19, often corresponding with the province’s legal drinking age.
Well there you have it, your kid was only sort of right. But one thing’s for sure, when your unruly teens start driving your family car, it might end up
