How do I reset my car’s garage door opener?

I pulled into my driveway yesterday, but when I hit my garage door opener, nothing happened. I had to get out of my car and put in the code to get it to open, which was less than ideal since rain was coming down in buckets. How can I reset my garage door opener?

I’m sorry to hear you had to run out in the rain! But with a few steps, you shouldn’t have to worry about a malfunctioning garage door opener in the future.
If following the steps in your car’s owner’s manual didn’t help, then rest assured that resetting your garage door opener manually is easy. All you have to do is:
  • Go into your garage and find the garage door opener motor. You can find this motor near the ceiling in your attic; it usually has a light and cord attached to it.
  • Once you’ve found the garage door opener, reset the system by looking for a button that’s marked as either “Home” or “Learn”.
  • Hold the button down for about 10 seconds to reset the system. This should work in most cases.
If that doesn’t solve the issue, the problem may lie within your vehicle’s garage door opener buttons. Every car is different, so refer to your owner’s manual. Most cars use the same systems, so follow these steps:
  • Look for three buttons with a house icon on them on your rearview mirror.
  • Hold the first and third buttons for about 20 seconds until a red indicator light flashes.
  • Hold the garage door opener and press the button while pressing the first button on your rearview mirror.
  • If that doesn’t work, go to the garage door motor, pry off the back, and look for the learn button.
  • Press this button, then go back to your car and press the same garage door opener button.
This should solve the problem.
While your garage door opener is a handy device, parking outside is unavoidable at times. In this case, you may want to think about protecting your vehicle. That’s when you need
