How do I get rid of an acrylic smell in my house?
My living room has had a terrible smell ever since I did my nails in there. I used acrylic nail polish and I’m worried the fumes might be toxic. I’ve sprayed air freshener but it doesn’t mask the odor. How can I get the acrylic smell out of my house?

Oh gosh! I’m sorry to hear that you’re dealing with acrylic odor. An unpleasant smell can really spoil a cozy living room. Not only that, but you’re right to be worried—the fumes from acrylic nail polish is bad for your health! Luckily, there are a few things you can do to get rid of the acrylic smell in your house. Here’s what you’ll need to do:
- Remove the source of the odor. Make sure your nail polish containers are properly sealed and put away.
- Open the doors and windows. Get some ventilation going by opening the room up. If there are windows on different sides of the room, that will help even more because they’ll create a cross breeze.
- Get a fan going. If you have a box fan, set it backward in one of the windows to pull the air out.
- Burn a scented candle. Air fresheners and sprays aren’t usually against strong chemical odors like acrylic. Burning a scented candle for about half an hour works much better.
Remember, you need to clear the air before getting rid of the acrylic smell. Just covering up the smell won’t negate the harmful effects of breathing in the acrylic fumes.
In the future, you can avoid building up the acrylic smell by opening your windows beforehand and only using acrylic-based products in a well-ventilated area.
