How do I get car insurance to pay for my repairs?

I was in a car accident where I was at fault and I'm not sure what coverage I have. I've never filed a claim before, and honestly, this is all really overwhelming. How do I get car insurance to pay for my repairs?

“I’m really sorry that happened, and I hope everyone is alright. If you were at fault in an accident, what you need to do depends on the coverage you have.
If you were at fault in a car accident and only have
liability coverage
, unfortunately, your car insurance company won’t cover it. Liability only covers damage you do to other vehicles or drivers when you’re in an at-fault accident. On the bright side, you don’t have to do anything—but on the downside, you will have to pay out of pocket for repairs.
However, if you have
collision coverage
, you can call your insurance company to file a claim. You shouldn’t have any problems getting your car repaired, as long you pay your deductible, and as long as the repairs cost less than the actual cash value of the vehicle. If the repairs are more, your car is totaled, and you’ll get a check for the actual cash value.
If you didn’t have collision coverage this time, you may want to consider adding it to your policy. One of the easiest ways to do this is with the
Jerry
app—we’ll get you customized quotes from top providers so that all you have to do is pick the plan that works best for you.
Hopefully the damage is minimal and your recovery goes smoothly!”
