Truck drivers are in high demand and short supply, so now is a great time to maximize your earnings in the industry! If you’d like to start a career as a truck driver, you need to get a commercial driver’s license or CDL.
In most states, you first need to hold a current driver’s license. It can be a Class D, Class E, or non-CDL C. Then, you must take a written exam and pass a road test. For example, in
New York
, you have to take a written exam to get your CDL learner’s permit. Once you receive your permit, you need to have supervised driving time with someone who holds a CDL license. Finally, you take the road test to receive your license.
Many drivers opt to go to driving school, and in some cases, employers require it. Driving school can help prepare you for your career and give you more confidence to pass your CDL driving test.
To confirm what your state’s requirements are, you’ll want to contact your state’s DMV. Most licensing information is available online through the DMV website. If you have any questions, you should be able to contact the DMV by phone as well.
Since you’re choosing to become a truck driver, don’t forget about commercial truck insurance. Use the
