How do I change the ball joints on a 1995 Ford F-150?

I was feeling my steering wheel vibrating when I was driving, so I looked it up and I need to change the ball joints—but I don’t know how. How do I replace the ball joints on a 1995 Ford F-150?

This guide covers changing the lower ball joint, because the upper ball joint on a 1995 Ford F-150 isn’t serviceable. If it needs servicing, the whole control arm must be changed.
To change the lower ball joints on a 1995
Ford F-150
, you’ll need:
  • Ball joint removal tool
  • Two floor jacks and jack stands
  • Ratchet and socket set
  • Wrenches
  • Needle nose pliers
  • Breaker bar
  • Grease gun
  • Torque wrench
  • Hammer
  • Pry bar
If there are tools on this list that you don’t have, you can rent them cheaply from most auto parts stores. Once you have your tools (and your new ball joints), you’re ready to start.
  1. Jack up your Ford F-150 and support it with a jack stand
  2. Pry off the bearing cap in the middle of the wheel and unbolt the small bolt underneath to remove the wheel and tire
  3. Unbolt and remove the caliper and rotor and set aside
  4. If you have a 4WD, unplug and remove 4WD vacuum lines
  5. Unbolt and remove the anti-lock brake sensor
  6. Separate the ball joint from the wheel spindle
  7. Separate the tie-rod end from the wheel spindle
  8. Press out lower ball joint
  9. Install new ball joint
  10. Grease new ball joint
  11. Reinstall other parts in reverse order
You’re done!
