How do I adjust the idle RPM in my car?

Lately, my Honda CRV is idling high. It seems to be running fine, but the gas mileage is really suffering. I need to know how to adjust the idle RPM before things get worse. So, how can I adjust the idle RPMs in my car?

A change in idle performance is common as cars get older—fortunately, it is a pretty easy fix. You can adjust the idle RPM by locating and turning the screw on the throttle body.
Here is a step by step guide on how to adjust idle RPM:
  • Start your car, pop the hood, and allow it to warm up completely. You will make this adjustment with the car running. Make sure to avoid contact with hot engine parts.
  • Follow the air intake hose from the air filter to the throttle body. On the throttle body, look for a screw (possibly covered by a plastic cap). Pry the plastic cap off if it is still engaged.
  • Disconnect the idle air adjustment valve by locating and disengaging the electronic connector that holds it to the throttle body.
  • Turn the idle screw to adjust the idle—turn the screw to the left to increase the RPM or to the right to lower it.
  • When you have adjusted the idle—aim for 650 RPM—reconnect the idle air adjustment valve’s electrical connection. Lower the hood and turn your car off.
