Impress your driving instructor by making a good first impression, responding to their behavior, keeping them aware of your actions, and persevering.

Contrary to popular belief, the nation’s driving instructors and examiners are not an army of -testing robots on a mission to ruin teenagers’ hopes and dreams. Treating your driving instructor or examiner with respect will go a long way towards successfully getting your license.
- First impressions are important: Be on time, polite, and with documents ready to go. This can help form a positive impression that sticks with an instructor or examiner. While they’ll only grade your driving, they are people, too!
- Respond to their behavior: Some instructors and examiners are quiet and simply give you marching orders and watch you drive, while others might be chatty. If your instructor is quiet, respect this, listen to their instructions, and focus on your driving. If they want to chat, feel free to engage while listening and staying focused on the road. If you’re more comfortable staying quiet and just driving, that’s ok.
- Keep them aware: Show the instructor or examiner that you’re are alert and in command. If you make a mistake—like bumping into a curb—say it out loud and make it clear you know you made a mistake. This gives them confidence that you’re paying attention and learning from your errors. They won’t turn a blind eye to mistakes, but knowing you are aware of any faults can turn a potentially fatal error into a more minor one.
- Persevere: Driving instructors and examiners don’t expect perfection—if you mess up a maneuver, don’t sweat it. Ask if you can have a second chance, say, at parallel parking. Doing so can demonstrate that you are keen on fixing an error and dedicated to driving safely and correctly. If they give you another shot, take a breath and give it another go!
