How can I change the battery in a car key for a Mazda?

I recently bought this awesome little Mazda from a private seller. Everything about the car has been great so far—almost! The key fob does not seem to be working properly. How can I change the battery in a car key for a Mazda?

Congrats on the new Mazda! It’s always a great feeling when you’re happy with a large purchase.
To change the battery in your Mazda car key, follow these steps:
  1. Remove the metal key from the key fob.
  2. Insert a flathead screwdriver into the slots revealed when the key was removed. Twist the screwdriver, and the fob should come apart.
  3. Remove the battery cover and the old battery.
  4. Insert the new battery with the positive side facing up.
  5. Reassemble the key fob and replace the metal key.
  6. Test the key to make sure it works.
If you’re unsure which battery your fob uses, check your owner’s manual or read the engraving on the dead battery. It should say a series of numbers and letters. A replacement will be available for purchase at a local auto parts store or big-box retailer.
