Believe it or not, there’s an old-fashioned metal key hidden inside of your Mazda 6
key fob—and it’s super easy to remove! Better yet, you can use the metal key to start your Mazda, even if the fob’s battery is dead. As vehicle technology becomes more advanced, we tend to think less and less about our car’s key fob. The routine is simple: jump into the car, press the start button, and get on with the day! But did you know that your Mazda 6 key fob has a handful of hidden tricks, just waiting to be unlocked?
Here to walk you through the most useful (and coolest!) tricks is Jerry
, the super app
that helps folks find cheap car insurance
. Let’s jump in! How to find the hidden key in your Mazda key fob
Let’s imagine a scenario: it’s late at night, you’re walking down the city block to your car, and suddenly, heavy rain begins to fall. By the time you get to your Mazda, your key fob is soaked—and it won’t unlock your car door! What should you do?
Thankfully, the engineers at Mazda have your back. All you need to do is retrieve the metal key from your fob, then use it to unlock the car. Removing the metal key is simple: just push the small button on the back of your fob and let the key slide out.
Place the key into the slot next to your driver’s side door handle, turn the key, then pat yourself on the back—you’ve made it into your car (and out of the rain!).
Get rewarded for safe driving. Earn points and unlock benefits. Totally free.

Of course, getting into the car is only half of the battle. What about starting the car?
Again, the process is a piece of cake! Next to the ignition button, you should find a plastic cover with a small hole in the bottom half. Use the key to pop off the cover, turn the ignition, and you’re in business.
After you’ve returned home from your ordeal, be sure to order a CR2025 battery to get your Mazda 6 key fob back up and running.
Hidden Mazda 6 key fob tricks
We promised you that there would be some hidden magic in your Mazda 6, and it’s time to deliver on that promise! First, though, we’ll cover the Mazda 6 key fob essentials. You’re probably already familiar with these functions, but we’ll do a quick refresher just in case.
Mazda 6 key fob basics: unlock, lock, and pop the trunk
First, let’s go through some of the buttons that you’ll use every day:
To unlock your Mazda 6, press the “unlock” symbol. If you push it once, the driver’s door will open. Press it twice in a row, and the rest of the doors will open up!
To lock your Mazda 6, just press the “lock” symbol. Press it once, and the door will look. If you press it again, your Mazda will honk at you to let you know that the alarm is active.
To pop the hood, press and hold the “trunk” symbol. Alternatively, you can press the black button on the back of the hood—as long as your key fob is nearby, the trunk will spring open!
How to program your Mazda 6 key fob
When you first get your Mazda 6 key fob, or if you just replaced its battery, you might need to program the key fob. Fortunately, the process isn’t too bad! Just follow these steps:
Step 1: Sit in the driver’s seat with the door open.
Step 2: Press the “lock” button on the inside of the door, then immediately press the “unlock” button.
Step 3: Slide the key into the ignition. Turn it to the “on” position, then off. Do this three times within 10 seconds.
Step 4: Close the car door, open it again, and repeat the entire process (steps one through four) a total of three times.
Step 5: Press the “lock” button on your key fob twice, very quickly. The remote control should now be synced up with the car doors, and your key fob should be programmed!
If you’ve tried these steps, but your key fob is still misbehaving, you might need to take it to a Mazda dealership

All you need to do is press the “unlock” button twice. The second time, hold the “unlock” button for several seconds, and your windows will start to roll down. Now your car can enjoy the summer breeze!
