Does USAA renters insurance cover lost jewelry?
I inherited my great-great grandmother’s sapphire and diamond engagement ring. My mother is telling me that jewelry like that is not covered by my renters insurance. Is this true or not? Does USAA renters insurance cover lost jewelry?

Whenever we inherit or are given a valuable family heirloom, it can feel like an awesome responsibility. While you intend to keep it safe, accidents happen. And your mother is correct—USAA renters insurance does not cover lost jewelry. Even if the ring were stolen or destroyed in a fire (these are considered standard perils), a USAA renters policy wouldn’t reimburse you in full.
So, what can you do? As long as you already have a USAA renters policy, you should be eligible to take out additional Valuable Personal Property (VPP) insurance through USAA. This extra insurance will insure your ring against standard perils as well as accidental damage or loss. In addition, you won’t have to file a deductible.
Have the ring professionally appraised. You’ll want to determine whether the ring actually is valuable to insure through an extra VPP policy. In addition, you’ll need to submit an appraisal to USAA.
Keep in mind that USAA does have limits on reimbursement amounts. When you apply for VPP, check these limits.
