Does renters insurance cover package theft?
We had someone steal a package from our front doorstep the other night. Unfortunately, we don’t have a camera, so I don’t think we can track down the perpetrator—but we do have renters insurance. Does renters insurance cover package theft?

So sorry to hear about your stolen package! Thankfully, renters insurance does cover theft, even if it happens outside your door.
Your policy should reimburse you for the cost of your stolen package, as theft is a
named peril
on most renters policies.However, depending on the value of the item, it may not be worth filing a claim with your insurance provider. Remember that you’ll have to pay your deductible before your renters insurance coverage will kick in.
For example, if your deductible is $500 and your delivery included $300 worth of gadgets, filing a claim is counterproductive—the company won’t reimburse you for anything under $500, and your rates may increase due to having filed a claim.
Even if you’re covered by renters insurance in this case, it’s a good idea to examine your other insurance policies to make sure you aren’t overpaying for your coverage. Looking for a lower rate without sacrificing protection?
