Does home insurance cover a lockout?

We lost our keys on vacation and had to call a locksmith upon returning home. It was on a Sunday night, so we ended up having to call a 24-hour locksmith, which was way more expensive than a regular locksmith. We have a home insurance policy. Would home insurance cover a lockout?

Oh no! That sounds like a stressful way to end your vacation, but I’m glad you were able to get back into your house. Your home insurance policy may cover a lockout, but it depends on the type of policy you have.
For example, some home insurance policies, like
Costco
, include home lockout coverage and service. However, this isn’t standard coverage for all insurance companies.
In some instances, your policy may cover a lockout, but you’re still subject to your deductible. If you have a $1,000 deductible and the locksmith costs $500, you wouldn’t be able to submit a claim.
You can call your insurance company to speak with a claims agent or review your policy’s terms and conditions to determine whether you have coverage. If you do, your insurance may reimburse you for the cost of the 24-hour locksmith.
