How do you open a Subaru Legacy gas tank?

I just traded in my old Chevy Malibu for a newer Subaru Legacy, and while I love the look of my new car, it’s a little confusing trying to orient myself! I’m not even entirely sure how to open the fuel tank so I can gas up. How do you open a Subaru Legacy gas tank?

Figuring out how to fuel up a new car can be disorienting—but after a few tries, fueling up your new Legacy’s tank will feel like second nature. To open your
Subaru Legacy’s
gas tank, you’ll have to pull the lid release lever, then unscrew the gas cap. Here’s how to do that:
  • Locate the lid release lever on the left side of the driver’s footwell. It should be marked with a gas pump icon.
  • Pull the lid release lever up (toward you) to open the fuel filler door.
  • Exit your vehicle and go around to the open fuel door.
  • Pull the door the rest of the way open, then unscrew the gas cap by slowly turning it counterclockwise.
With the gas cap unscrewed, you’ll be able to use the fuel pump to refill your Legacy’s tank! When you’re done filling the
entire tank
, don’t forget to reattach the gas cap by turning it clockwise, then press the fuel filler door closed.
