Does a car heater use gas or electric?

I want to buy an electric car. I heard that car heaters use gas, and electric cars can’t have them. Does a car heater use gas or electric?

Great question! Car heaters run on electricity. In a gas-powered vehicle, this electricity is generated by the motor that runs on gas. In an electric vehicle, this electricity comes from the motor and battery pack. Just like your car’s air conditioning system, all it needs is electricity to run.
All car heaters run off electricity. The only difference is the source of that electricity. A gas-powered vehicle’s car heater uses electricity that is generated by the motor. Since the motor needs gas, in a round-about way yes, the heater does need gas.
However, if you get rid of the dependence on gas, you can still have a car heater. In an
electric vehicle
, there’s no gas involved, but you still have that toasty air blowing out the vents. That’s because the heater is powered by electricity from the motor or battery pack.
So whether you have a fuel engine or an electric motor in your vehicle, all you need to do to warm up and get toasty is turn the key and light it up.
Whether your car runs on gasoline or electric power you always need insurance.
