Do you have to be with your car to get it towed?

My car died late at night and I left it on the side of the road to deal with in the morning. I have some other things I need to do tomorrow morning, but I also need to tow my vehicle to the shop. Do I need to be with my vehicle to get it towed?

Typically, you have to be with your car to get it towed. This is due to a number of factors, but primarily to prove that the car is yours and that you have the appropriate documentation.
When you get a car towed, you should do the following:
  • Gather your registration, driver’s license, and roadside assistance membership card (if applicable).
  • Schedule a towing with a local service or one covered by
    towing and labor coverage
through your car insurance provider, your credit card, or your roadside assistance provider—such as [AAA].
  • Wait for the tow truck at the scheduled time.
  • Provide your proof of ownership, sign any paperwork, and tell the tow truck driver where you want to take your car.
While most roadside assistance programs will pay for your towing, you still might need to save money to pay for any repairs to your vehicle. So while you’re waiting for the tow truck, spend a minute or two to find
