Do I need an international driving license for Canada?

My best friends and I want to take a road trip to Toronto this summer. We’ll be coming from Chicago. Is my U.S. driver’s license valid in Canada? Or do I need to get an international driving license?

Great question—you don’t want a run-in with law enforcement! You do not need an international driving license for Canada.
Canada does recognize a valid U.S. driver’s license if you’re a temporary visitor. However, if you’re planning to extend your stay—that is, remain in Canada over 90 days—you will have to get an international driving permit (IDP) before you arrive.
Although a U.S. driver’s license is valid in Canada, make sure you have the right car insurance, too. Your current policy isn’t likely to cover driving internationally. Luckily,
