2020 Ford Explorer 2.3 engine oil capacity

First, you need to find out how much oil your 2020 Ford Explorer 2.3L needs
Your car’s engine oil capacity is 5.2 quarts. But wait, you might ask, what’s the 2.3L number then
The “2.3L” in your model name refers to the engine displacement, or how much space the cylinders take up. Your oil capacity is different and tells you how much oil you need for an oil change.

What kind of oil does a 2020 Ford Explorer 2.3 take?

Next, you need to find out what type of oil works best for your engine. Ford recommends 2020 Explorer drivers use 5W-30 grade motor oil
But why is it important to use 5W-30 oil? Well, this type of oil is easy on your Ford’s engine, meaning that it will cause less wear and tear in the long run—not to mention that it works well in cooler temperatures too.
The 5 tells you that it has a low viscosity at 0°F, while the 30 indicates that it remains thin at 212°F, your engine’s normal operating temperature. The W stands for winter, meaning that it’s compatible with cold weather.

How often to change oil on a 2020 Ford Explorer 2.3

Then, you need to be familiar with the signs that you need to perform an
oil change
It’s common practice to change your Ford’s oil every 3,000 to 5,000 miles. However, this range can differ depending on things like your driving habits, how often you drive, and more. That’s why some people choose to just check on their engine after every other refuel.
Here are a few signs that your Ford needs an oil change:
  • You notice that your motor oil is dirty. Dirty
engine oil is black and gritty
in texture. Clean oil should be light in color
  • You hear unfamiliar noises coming from your engine
  • A new smell appears when you’re driving. Look for anything that smells like oil, smoke, or like something burning
  • You experience a decrease in performance.

How to change your oil and oil filter

Once you’ve determined that your Ford needs an oil change, get the following items handy:
  • Socket wrench
  • Drain pan
  • Filter wrench
  • Replacement filter
  • 5W-30 engine oil
  • A container to dispose of the old oil
  • Towels to help clean up
Start by running your engine for five minutes to reach normal operating temperature (it can take longer in colder temperatures). Then, turn the engine off,
open the hood
, and follow these steps:
  • Screw off the oil fill cap
  • Look for your oil drain bolt and washer, which can be found under the engine. Remove them and make sure you have your drain pan to catch the old oil
  • Replace the old oil filter with the new one, and let the engine finish draining oil
  • Screw the oil drain bolt and washer back on and tighten it to 29 lb-ft
  • Refill the engine with your new oil and replace the fill cap
Your dipstick will let you know when you’ve added enough fresh oil. After changing your oil, it’s a good idea to turn on your car and let your engine run for about 30 seconds before you check the oil level. This will give you a more accurate measurement, and you’ll be able to top it off if necessary.
Finish everything off, turn on your engine, and look for any leaks.
Don’t forget to clean everything up! Collect the old oil in a container to bring to a recycling center or participating auto parts store.
