Do I have to add my spouse to my auto insurance policy?

I'm looking for a new policy and every insurance company keeps saying I need to add my husband as a driver, but he has a terrible driving record. When he is quoted, it's too expensive! What can I do?

“Every insurance company is different. Some require you to have your spouse listed while others will allow you to exclude them.
The law tends to view married couples as one entity. If you are sued due to a car accident, your spouse would automatically be sued too. This is why most insurance companies want spouses on the policy.
Does your husband have his own car and
car insurance
? If so, obtain a copy of his policy and send it to your current insurance provider. They may use this proof of other insurance to update him from an active driver to a non-driver. With this option, he would not cost anything on your policy.
Completing a driver exclusion form is also another option. A named driver exclusion specifically names the drivers that will not have coverage on your insurance policy. You will only want to select this option if you are 100% sure that your husband will never drive your car. If an accident occurs while an excluded driver is operating your car, you will be held financially responsible for the accident and won’t receive any compensation from your insurance policy.
Unless you and your husband keep all of your finances separate, combining insurance policies will save you money. Your good driving record will keep his premium down a little and you will both benefit from the

.
Another way to save money is to take advantage of any additional discounts such as:
Keep in mind that most accidents and violations will fall off the policy in about three years, so he won’t have a high rate forever! The best option may be to shop for car insurance online so you can see all of the available options in the same place.
Using a smart-comparison tool like the
Jerry app
will help make this happen! Jerry collects auto and home quotes from over 50 providers and brings the lowest available rates right to the app on your phone.
Good luck!”
